Something new, something old

Hi, all! Just finishing up summer myth here in the good ol’ greater DC metropolitan area. My students and I discussed the question of why “we” study mythology today, and why “we” study stories at all. Which of course plagues my mind all the time. Though my answer changes by the hour, part of it is a conviction that there is a deep psychological reason that certain humans find certain stories satisfying. Last year, I picked up an immense book on just this question called The Seven Basic Plots: Why We Tell Stories, which I critique here in the latest addition to the Prose page. Though I wrote it up months ago, it fell off my radar screen for a bit and only recently has returned. Go figure.
